Anthony's Birth Story

This post should be subtitled "Sometimes you just need your mom"

So, all last week I had non-painful, semi-regular contractions from about 5pm to 8pm each night. My appointment on Wednesday came, and even though I had planned not to have an internal exam, I caved since I'd been having the contractions. I found out that I was 3cm dilated, 50% effaced, -2 station, and soft.

Thursday night I started having contractions every 5 minutes lasting 1 minute. They stayed consistent like that for about an hour and a half. They started spacing out a bit, and so I decided to go to bed. I woke up Friday morning still pregnant.

On Friday, I woke up with a headache. I hadn't had any headaches all pregnancy, so I was wondering if maybe my blood pressure was starting to go up again like it had with Caleb. Still, I got up and went to work. By halfway through the day I had wrapped things up at work, and I just didn't feel well. Since I work right across the street from the hospital where I go for my appointments, I decided to just head over for a blood pressure check. The bp check showed that everything was normal, but since I still wasn't feeling well I headed home for the afternoon to get some rest. Some rest that never happened because Caleb's daycare called and I ended up in the ER with him getting 9 stitches.

Now, all week long I had been on the phone with my mom trying to figure out when she was going to come out to stay with us so she could take care of Caleb when I went into labor. We'd changed things up a bunch of times. Originally she was coming Friday, then it was Sunday, then it was "sometime next week." She didn't want to be annoying staying with us for a long time since it could have been weeks before the baby came, and I didn't want her to have to be here all alone all day while we worked and Caleb went to daycare. After the incident with Caleb, she just called and said I'm coming tomorrow. Saturday morning, my mom went to the train station and bought a ticket to come out. The train was scheduled to arrive at 8pm Saturday night.

Saturday morning, Andrew, Caleb, and I got up and took Caleb to the zoo like we had promised. The weather was supposed to be gorgeous and I figured that little walking could be just what I needed to get things going. After the zoo, we came home and I was exhausted! I pretty much spent the rest of the afternoon on the couch.

Caleb was already in bed, so I decided to head to the train station to pick up my mom while Andrew stayed home with Caleb. On the way there, I started having cramping. I called my sister and Andrew to tell them about it. But by the time I picked up mom, I convinced myself it was just gas. We stopped at Wendy's on the way home and picked up some delicious Frosty's.

::Here's where the actual birth part starts::

Around 10pm, we all headed to bed, except I never went to bed.

Per Saturday night tradition the last few months, Caleb was sleeping in our bed with Andrew, and I was sleeping in Caleb's bed. This worked out well because as soon as I laid down I started having contractions that felt different. They were only on the bottom half of my belly, but I could also feel a lot of pain in my upper legs. I started timing them and they were about 8.5-9.5 minutes apart. I decided to let Andrew sleep, but told my mom what was going on. At 11:15pm, I called to the midwife on call at the hospital. Tina called back at 11:30pm and suggested that I take a shower and drink some water and call back in an hour. I hopped in the shower, and even though I didn't have my handy dandy contraction timer on my phone available while I was in there, I could tell that they were getting closer together.

By midnight, I was getting scared that things would progress quickly. Contractions were now 6 minutes apart and getting pretty intense. I had intended to wait to call Tina back, but I ended up just bursting into our room to wake Andrew up. He jumped out of bed and his feet hit the floor before I could finish saying, "we're going to the hospital." By 12:30 we were in the car, and I decided to just call Tina on our way so as not to waste any time.

We got to the hospital and checked in at triage by about 1:15. I was hooked up to monitors...beep, beep, beep...yep, my bp was elevated. Around 1:30 Tina checked me and I was still 3cm just like on Wednesday, but I had thinned to 90%. She thought that this was probably it, but wanted to see some progress before admitting me. The plan was for her to come back in an hour.

Immediately after she checked me, my contractions went to 3 minutes apart. And baby's heart rate started to decel during each contraction. So Tina came back only 30 minutes later and I had dilated to 5/6cm. Andrew called my mom to tell her we were being admitted, and the nurses pushed me down the hall to a L&D room probably 15 minutes later. Unfortunately, because of the blood pressure and the baby's heart rate decels, I had to stay hooked up to the monitors. Not being able to move around was driving me nuts! Tina got me a birthing ball (giant yoga ball) to sit on and that helped a lot.

What seemed like just a few contractions later, I was feeling a lot of pressure in my bum with each contraction. I didn't say anything at first because I figured that this couldn't be it. I didn't want to get checked only to find out that nothing new had happened over the last short period of time. But soon I knew that I had to push. Tina got me back on the bed and I was complete. She tried to break my water, but apparently that had already happened at some point (Looking back, I think probably earlier in the day before I went to pick mom up at the train station).

At that point, Tina said, "Let's just see what your body does on this next contraction." And, my body could not help but to push through the intense pain. I asked if the baby's head was "right there" and the whole room immediately said, "yes!" One more contraction with pushing, and our little guy was here. Kind of amazing how my body knew exactly what to do with those contractions without anyone coaching for counting. I ended up with just a very small tear that didn't even require a stitch. Of course this makes it sound like all was calm in the room during those two little pushes. I was screaming bloody murder saying things like, "I quit," "I can't do this," "I don't want to do this anymore." I feel bad for anyone who was in the hospital at 3:00 that morning. I was freaked out because I never had the urge to push like that with Caleb. It was certainly intense, but absolutely amazing!

So Anthony was born just about 5 hours after I felt my first real contraction, two hours after we arrived at the hospital, and about an hour and a half of active labor. If we have another I'm checking into the hospital at 37 weeks.

We were released from the hospital on Monday afternoon, a little less than 36 hours after his birth.

Caleb is in LOVE with his baby brother.  We have to keep reminding him not to touch Anthony's head and to be gentle with the hugs and kisses, but he really does love AJ.

Welcome Anthony

Pregnancy - 39 Weeks

Pregnancy: 39 weeks

Feeling:
Extremely tired.

Health:
BP 120/70.  Gained 1lb this week.  Baby's heart rate was up a little into the higher 140s this week, but still well within the normal range.  I caved and got checked this week and found out that I am already 3cm dilated.  I had contractions every night this week, but nothing that lasted or got stronger.  Really hoping that this weekend is the end.

Belly:
Taken Wednesday at 38 weeks, 4 days.  Please ignore the dumb face I'm making.

Next Appointment: June 29th at 39w, 6d; and I'll be really annoyed if I have to go to that appointment.

Pregnancy - 38 Weeks

Pregnancy: 38 weeks, 1 day

Feeling:
Tired, ginormous, ready to be D-O-N-E.

Health:
BP 120/70.  Weight gain is good, baby's heart rate is slowly going down as he/she gets bigger.  It is now in the low 140s each appointment.

Movement: Head down and ready to go.  Movements have slowed a lot as there's less and less space in there, but baby still has some active periods each day.

Belly:
Taken last Wednesday at 37 weeks, 4 days just before I had my spa appointment.

Next Appointment: June 20th at 38w, 4d.

Pregnancy - 35 Weeks

Pregnancy: 35 weeks, 3 days

Sleep: Amazingly, I'm still sleeping really well.

Gender: The ring test said that Caleb would be a boy, and that this baby is a girl.  We'll see if it was right for a second time in just a few weeks!

Names: I can probably stop posting this since at this point it really is just a tease.  Perhaps if I end up going past my due date I'll give some hints about the names.

Feeling:
I hate drinking water.  It is like an instant heartburn trigger along with pretty much everything else I put in my mouth.

Health:
Everything looks good.  BP is doing well, weight gain is good, baby's heart rate was around 150.  Note that I didn't even change a word of this from my 31 week post because it is all still the same.

Movement: 99% sure baby is head down.  My midwives think so too, so that was reassuring.  I'm seeing all kinds of movement in my belly, just none when Andrew is around.  The other day I actually asked him to move closer to me so the baby would stop kicking me so hard!

Belly:
Taken last Thursday at 34 weeks, 5 days.

Next Appointment: June 5th at 36w, 3d.

Pregnancy - 31 Weeks

Pregnancy: 31 weeks, 5 days

Sleep: Got confirmation that my restlessness is more related to Andrew waking me up than anything pregnancy related.  Friday night Caleb camped out in our king sized bed with Andrew while I slept in Caleb's bed.  Mostly so Andrew could get a good night of sleep without my snoring.  And we all slept great!

Gender: Andrew is gaining weight.  Despite the fact that we've pretty much stopped eating out completely over the last 2 months, he's still gaining weight.  The Old Wives Tale says baby is a girl.

Names:
All ready to go!

Feeling:
Heartburn which I think is actually reflux, upper back pain, general uncomfortableness, more frequent trips to the bathroom

Health:
Everything looks good.  BP is doing well, weight gain is good, baby's heart rate was around 150.

Movement: Well a few days ago I would have said without a doubt that baby was head down.  I was feeling hiccups down low and lots of kicks up high.  But just today I felt what I thought were kicks down lower and what I thought was a tiny butt settling in just below my belly button.  So, maybe he or she is still flipping around in there.

Belly:
Taken last yesterday at 31 weeks, 4 days.

Next Appointment:
May 9th at 32w, 4d.

Pregnancy - 29 Weeks

Pregnancy: 29 weeks, 3 days

Sleep: I'm getting restless, but I'm not sure if that has more to do with the pregnancy or the fact that my pregnancy induced snoring is making Andrew sleep poorly which in turn is making me sleep poorly. I may soon relegate myself to the daybed in the baby's room so we can both get some good nights of sleep.

Gender: Two guesses from real, live old{er than I am} wives suggest that this baby is a girl.

Names:
Officially set in stone....errr, sewn onto onesies for coming home outfits. I hope I can sell or gift the unused outfits to someone having a baby with the appropriate initials.

Feeling:
Heartburn, sciatic pain, upper back pain, general uncomfortableness when walking long distances. I swear I was not ever this uncomfortable last time, but in reality it's not that bad.

Health:
Will find out more at my appointment later this week.

Movement: Baby is already proving that he or she is going to do this on his or her own terms. Right after I posted about the predictability of movements, things went all crazy! Some days I feel a ton of movement, other days not as much. Baby is doing some serious flip flops in there, and I'm starting to get scared of having a breech baby at the end of this. I'm hoping that soon here baby will get and stay head down!

Belly:
Taken last Friday on my 31st birthdayat 28 weeks, 6 days. I'm getting huge, right?

Next Appointment:
This Friday at 29w, 6d on April 20th.

Pregnancy - 26 Weeks

Pregnancy: 26 weeks, 5 days

Sleep: Being able to open the windows and sleep with some fresh air blowing through our bedroom has done wonders for my sleep!

Gender: Chinese Gender Chart says boy.

Names: Names are still picked and haven't changed in nearly three weeks.

Feeling: Heartburn! Sciatic pain has gone away, thank goodness, but I have developed some other minor aches and pains that I think are here to stay for the long haul.

Health: I had a prenatal appointment last Thursday. BP was 112/70ish at my appointment this past Thursday. Baby's heart rate was 159. I only gained 1lb over the last 6 weeks for a total of 8lbs for the pregnancy so far! I had my glucose challenge test, and I haven't heard anything back this week, so I'm going to assume that no news is good news on that front.

Movement:
Lots of movement. Andrew finally felt the baby about a week and a half ago. I love how predictable the baby's movements are. I usually feel him/her first thing in the morning, around 10am, mid-afternoon, and then all evening until I go to bed. I hope this is a sign of an easily scheduled infant!

Belly:
Taken Wednesday at 26 weeks, 4 days. I swear I don't always wear that shirt!

Next Appointment: Next appointment is at 30w on April 20th.

Pregnancy - 24 Weeks

Pregnancy: 24 weeks

Sleep: Starting to get a little restless.

Gender: Cravings edition. They say craving sweets means girl, salty/sour means boy. Well I'm craving more salty stuff this time around supposedly meaning boy. But with Caleb all I wanted was sweets even more than usual. You decide.

Names: Girl name picked! Boy name picked! Now to keep them a secret for another 16-ish weeks.

Feeling: Heartburn went away for a week, but is back with a vengeance the last few days.

Health: Some sciatic pain started this week shooting down my left leg, but so far it isn't something that keeps me from doing things.

Movement:
Lots of movement, but still waiting for Andrew to feel baby move. He's just not patient enough!

Belly:
Taken Wednesday at 23 weeks, 4 days.

And the belly progression:

Next Appointment: Next appointment is at 26w on March 28th where I'll have my glucose test for gestational diabetes.

Pregnancy - 22 Weeks

Pregnancy: 22 weeks

Sleep: Great. Last night I went to bed when Caleb went to bed (around 8pm). He woke me up at 11:30 for some ice water. After I went downstairs to get him that, I fell right back to sleep and slept until he made me get up at 6am. I feel so refreshed, and I determined that I really need to get myself to bed earlier on a regular basis. Gotta build up the sleep while I still can!

Gender: Memaw's tale. When my mom saw me a few weeks ago she said that I was definitely having a girl because my butt is huge. So thank you for that one Memaw!

Names: Girl name picked, boy name not even discussed.

Feeling: Heartburn is my enemy!

Health: Doing great!

Movement:
Caleb felt the baby move the other night when I was putting him to bed. He loves to give the baby hugs and kisses every night and randomly throughout the day. As he was laying on my belly he told me that the baby kicked him. Melts my heart how much he loves the baby already.

Belly:
Taken Wednesday at 21 weeks, 4 days. I think the stripes made the belly {and my butt} shrink. I might be wearing horizontal stripes every day now.

Next Appointment: Next appointment is at 26w on March 28th.

Pregnancy - 20 Weeks

Pregnancy: 20 weeks, 1 day

Sleep: Nothing new to report. Still sleeping, still not having to get up to use the bathroom, still snoring.

Gender: Baby's heartrate OWT. Supposedly if baby's heart rate is high it indicates girl, low indicates a boy. With the exception of one heart rate reading baby has had a rate above 155 each time. Caleb's was always in the 140s. So by this OWT, baby is a girl.

Names: No more discussion of names. Pretty sure we've got a girl name nailed down.

Feeling: We're all healthy again. My only symptom seems to be heartburn which is exacerbated by eating tomato based sauces and chocolate. I can give up the pasta, but not the chocolate!

Health: Everything is looking great. Had another appointment last week and baby's heart rate was 155.

Movement:
I may have spoken too soon. These kicks have gotten quite strong recently, so maybe we'll be able to feel movement on the outside sooner than I thought.

Belly:

Taken today at 20 weeks, 1 day

And let's take a look at just how much my belly (butt and boobs) have grown.

Next Appointment: Next appointment is at 26w on March 28th. I'll have my glucose test to check for gestational diabetes (GD). Despite the fact that I look like a whale and that my butt is just as big as my belly, my weight gain has been minimal, so I feel pretty good about not having GD.

Pregnancy - 19 Weeks

Pregnancy: 19 weeks, 1 day

Sleep: I'm sleeping great! But apparently I snore...badly. So Andrew isn't sleeping very well. Eh, I call it a trade off for all those times I'm going to get up in the middle of the night to nurse the baby while he gets to stay in bed and sleep.

Gender: OWT of the week. Since this week was our anatomy scan ultrasound, this isn't really and old wives tale. When we had our anatomy scan with Caleb, Andrew swore he saw a penis. This time, he said, "I saw nothing to indicate a boy."

Names: We may have settled on a girl name, haven't even discussed boy names.

Feeling: Well, considering that we were a house full of sickies this week, I feel like crap. I had what I thought was strep throat (culture came back negative) and pink eye. Just when I thought I was getting better, I've been hit with something else that has completely drained my energy and left me feeling pretty awful.

Health: Mine, not so good. See above. We had our anatomy scan yesterday at 19 weeks exactly. Baby is 100% healthy. We had a wonderful ultrasound tech who pointed everything out to us as she was taking the measurements. We left with 5 pictures and a 3 minute DVD of baby moving all around. Baby spent most of the time trying to suck on his/her hands. Next time we get to see baby will be on his/her birthday!

Movement:
Still feeling lots of kicks from the inside. Unfortunately, I found out that I have another anterior placenta, so Andrew and Caleb likely won't be able to feel baby for a while :(

Belly: Still huge

Taken at 18 weeks, 5 days

Next Appointment: Next appointment is February 9th.

Pregnancy - 18 Weeks

Pregnancy: 18 weeks

Sleep: I bought a body pillow for the first time in two pregnancies. Why did I not do this before now? I'm sleeping better than ever! Love that thing!

Gender: Since we're obviously not finding out if we're having a son or daughter until he/she arrives, I thought it would be fun to include a bunch of different Old Wives Tales (OWTs) here. I'll do one each week for as long as I have OWTs to use. I already mentioned in my 16 week post that momma's intuition says this baby is a girl. Another OWT tells you put a tablespoon of baking soda in a cup and add a bit of urine. If it fizzes, baby is a boy. No fizz = girl. Mine fizzed indicating baby is a boy.

Names: Going nowhere fast.

Feeling: Sickness has been gone completely. Still waiting for an energy burst.

Health: I feel great, so I assume everything is going well.

Movement: Lots of kicks on the inside. Still waiting to feel it from the outside so Andrew and Caleb can feel the baby move. I can't wait to see Caleb's face when he feels it for the first time.

Belly: Ridiculously huge!

Taken at 17 weeks, 4 days

Next Appointment: Anatomy scan ultrasound is scheduled for February 4th. Next appointment is February 9th.

Pregnancy - 17 Weeks

Pregnancy: 17 weeks

Sleep: Still doing pretty well. No complaints so far.

Gender: ???????

Names: Oh yeah, baby app. Forgot about that! I'm starting to think I may just need a good old paperback book since I can't find the two we had with Caleb. I loaned them to a friend and then we moved twice. I've looked in all the places I would expect them to be. I don't have very much hope of finding them at this point.

Feeling: I'm kind of afraid to say it for fear of jinxing it, but I think my morning sickness may finally be gone. Energy is mostly back, and I don't fall asleep at the drop of a hat anymore. I know because I laid in the dark with Caleb for a half hour last night, and I didn't pass out! That would have been unheard of a few weeks ago.

Health: I was having some pretty awful pain in my pubic bone area for about a week. But magically after I scheduled an appointment to have it checked out, the pain went away. I still have to be careful about how I sit and how long I'm on my feet, but I'm just happy that the pain is mostly gone. Otherwise, my health is great. Blood pressure was 120/70-something at my appointment this week, weight gain is on track, and everything else is looking good too.

Movement: The kicks have started! I told Andrew the other night that I think I'm going to be bruised on the inside when the baby gets a little stronger.

Belly: See for yourself:

Taken at 16 weeks, 4 days

Next Appointment: Anatomy scan ultrasound is scheduled for February 4th. Next appointment is February 9th.

Pregnancy - 16 Weeks

I'm going to try to do this every week. We'll see how long that lasts!

Pregnancy:
16 weeks

Sleep: Amazing! Still wish I could get more, but even though I wake up to roll over a bunch I feel like I'm getting good deep sleep most of the night.

Gender: We don't know, and we aren't planning to find out! Just like with Caleb, we've decided to wait until the birth to find out if this little one is a boy or a girl. But, momma's intuition says girl.

Names: Going nowhere! I'm buying a baby name app this weekend so we can start getting serious about choosing a boy name and a girl name!

Feeling: Completely different than I did with Caleb. With him, my all day sickness went away at 10 weeks like magic never to return. I'm still experiencing bouts of it with this pregnancy. I have a bit more energy, but I'm still pretty exhausted most of the time. Heartburn arrived weeks ago, so Tums are my new best friend.

Health: Will update on this after my appointment next week.

Movement: Been feeling flutters for a few weeks. Ready to start feeling real kicks since it seems like I don't have an anterior placenta this time!

Belly: Popping out already. I don't think I was this big with Caleb until almost 30 weeks.

Next Appointment: Thursday, January 19th. Anatomy scan ultrasound is scheduled for February 4th.

Not the greatest, but this is what I got for today. Geez...only 11 days in and already I'm fading! Anyway, here is baby #2 bump at 15 weeks, 4 days.
