Match-y, Match-y

Hoping to catch a cute pic of Caleb and his cousins in their new coordinating outfits. Here's the one I made for my niece.

The pillowcase dress is nothing new. I've done a made a bunch of them before...

...but the matching diaper cover, I am IN LOVE with! Please ignore the fact that it looks like a ginormous pair of old lady undies in this picture. Super easy using this tutorial.

Caleb and my nephew will be wearing matching ties made out of the blue dot fabric I used for trim on the dress. Hopefully I'll be able to post a cute picture of them all wearing the clothes...a cute picture of a 5.5 year old, a 2.5 year old, and a 1 year old? Right!

Dying from Cuteness

Do you think it's possible to die from cuteness overload? Well if so, these shoes will do it, or at least make you wish you had a daughter small enough to wear them. I made them for a friend to give to a friend as a baby shower gift, and I used this super easy pattern. Hard to believe, but they are even cuter in person!

Just For Me

I bought this pattern from Etsy a few months ago in JUNE, and I finally got around to making it for myself. I kept thinking about it and wondering what fabric I'd use. Yesterday I remembered my favorite fabric combo and started cutting out the pattern pieces. I love how it turned out!

Recent Projects

First up, some shirts I made for Caleb. Of course I knew that I was going to make a shirt for Caleb's 2nd birthday, and of course it was going to be trains. He really likes the book "Down By The Station," and I really liked the detail on the train on the front cover. I decided that it would be a lot of effort, but that it would be worth it to see Caleb's face when he saw the shirt.

And for comparison to the cover of the book.

He wore it for his birthday on a Friday, again the next day for his first party with GranB, Pop Pop, and cousin Nick, and again a week later for another party with Mommy's side of the family and some friends too. And he's going to be wearing it a bunch more before he outgrows it!

A few weeks ago I decided to design a Halloween tee for Caleb. I pieced it together from different designs I saw online. I was actually pretty quick with getting the fabric cut, but it took me three weeks to finally get it sewn!

The next project was truly a collaboration between the client and myself. Hannah's mommy, Jess, contacted me to make some soft wall letters for above the crib in the nursery. Living in San Francisco, she wanted something that wouldn't hurt her little girl if it fell down in the event of an earthquake. We came up with the idea to applique the letters onto small pillow squares stuffed with fiberfill. The fabric matches Hannah's Pottery Barn Kids Anywhere Chair. Below are some photos of the letters in Hannah's room.

Next up are a 1st birthday tee and firetruck tee that I was for an order from my Facebook page. I went to HS with this little guy's mommy. His daddy is a fireman, hence the firetruck tee.

The day after Caleb's party, we attended a 1st birthday party for his new friend, Layla. I met her mommy at the park one of our first weeks here, and it has been great having a new friend in our new location. When we got invited to her birthday party, I quick whipped up this dress using a new pattern. I'm completely IN LOVE with this dress! I almost didn't want to give it away instead keeping it hanging on the wall in my living room so I could look at it all the time. I love the colors (I'm obsessed with this floral fabric), I love the buttons, and I just love the cut of this thing. If I thought it would look good on me, I'd make one in my size!

I added a store bought long sleeve onesie when I gave it as a gift since we're heading into the colder weather. I think it looks just as cute like this!

Finally, a few more orders from my Facebook page. This one was a large order including a Big Bro tee, a "100% natural" onesie for the lil bro-to-be, and a 2nd Birthday tee for William who loves strawberry and mint chocolate chip ice cream.

Check out the little black "chocolate chip" beads...my favorite part.

Last, but not least is a 2nd birthday tee for C's best friend in Arizona, little E.

This little guy is getting a firetruck party, and his mommy, Cortney, ordered some party decorations from The TomKat Studio. She requested a matching shirt for the birthday boy to wear to the party. Below is a collage with the firetruck from the paper items by The TomKat Studio, and two photos of the tee I made.

Next up I'm making some wall letters for my niece (sneak peek below)...

...a tooth fairy pillow for my nephew, C's Halloween costume, name pennants to hang above C's bed and a bed skirt to match his new comforter from Aunt Dani and Uncle Matt, and some Christmas presents. As always, I can't wait to see the results.

The Things We Do

Last year I went WAY overboard for Caleb's 1st Birthday Party. This year, since we've moved, there really isn't anyone to celebrate with {so sad}, so no way to have a huge party. We are fortunate that Andrew's parents will be driving in for the weekend of C's bday to celebrate with us, and the following weekend we'll have a small family party at my parent's house with just a few friends invited as well. I don't intend to go all out for every birthday, but with the extenuating circumstances this year {the recent move away from all of C's little friends and the fact that money is tight to say the least}, I did want to try to make his birthday as special as possible. So I'm killing myself trying to make and sew an AWESOME birthday shirt for him and later this week when I attempt to make a train cake from scratch using boxed cake mix, regular cake pans, icing, and store bought candies. Thank GOD I'm married to an amazing man who has made more architectural models {albeit out of wood, not cake} than I can to think about, and most importantly who has volunteered to help out with the cake. He's even started making sketches of the thing! I bet you can't wait to see how that turns out ;)

Anyway, back to the shirt. In case you're interested, here's the train that I'm trying to copy {minus the dog and birds}. Caleb enjoys reading this book at GranB and Pop Pop's house.

Last night I spent 2.5 hours after Caleb went to bed and then during today's nap I spent another 2ish hours cutting out the fabrics and attaching them to the shirt with a heat and bond type of product. That part is finally done though not without injury:

Yes, I ironed my leg just as I was attaching the last piece of fabric to the shirt. That's gonna leave a mark!

Now I just have to try to survive all the sewing that is going to be involved in finishing this thing up. Just chalking it up to parenthood and one of the many crazy things we do to make our kids happy!

The Perfect Day

I was beginning to think that it wasn't possible to have a completely, 100% enjoyable day when you're the mother of a toddler. But today I had an almost magical day with Caleb. Tired of going to the park every.single.day, I decided today would be our first zoo trip as just the two of us {we've gone with Daddy twice before}. I was a little worried since I knew that would mean driving around the city about half an hour in the car just shortly after rush hour with a usually cranky toddler in the back seat, but I decided it was worth the try.

When C woke up this morning, I went into his room and didn't immediately turn the light on. He looked tired still {and so was I} so I just layed down on his bed. He did the say laying right next to me laying his hand on my arm. It was the absolute sweetest thing, and the perfect way to start "The Perfect Day."

After Daddy was finished showering {all of five minutes later}, he came in and "woke" us up. As has become a daily occurrence as of late, Caleb and I hopped in the shower. He loves the shower and using "Daddy soap" {aka body wash}, and he loves it when I pick him up and we sing, "Singing in the Rain" and then we stick our tongues out and catch some "raindrops." I love feeling his super soft skin on mine just like when he was first born and placed on my chest. And everytime we take our morning shower, I remind myself that this time might be the last time he wants to shower with mommy. Even on those days when I want to shower alone, when I really need to shave my legs but can't with him in there, when the hot water is running out and I just want to hop out but he keeps saying, "Cay-yub stay in shower," I remind myself that these days won't last forever.

So after shower, we had some breakfast {waffles}. I put chocolate chips on mine, Caleb thought they were raisins and said, "Cay-yub need waisins too," so he ate blueberry waffles with raisins on top. We sat at the table and colored with crayons on blank sheets of computer paper. Finally it was time to head to the zoo, so we packed up the bag and got in the car. I thought the GPS was taking us in a funny direction, but decided to just go with it. Forty-five minutes later we were arriving at the zoo having driven around the opposite side of the city that we usually do when we head to the zoo. If someone would have told me yesterday that it would take us that long to get there, I probably wouldn't have gone knowing how C usually behaves in the car for any more than 5 minutes. But, today, miracle day, he was an angel in the car even saying at one point, "mommy finding the zoo." What I usually say when we're heading to a park and he complains is, "Mommy's working on finding the park."

Once at the zoo, we checked the animals, some deer:

C was more interested in the telescope thing than the elephants.

Awesome view of a momma elephant nursing her baby.

Again, more interested in the fish and ducks than the giraffes

Today we discovered they have a very nice primate exhibit at the zoo. The gorillas in particular have a very nice habitat. Unfortunately, I couldn't photograph them because Caleb was trying to run off to the next exhibit.

We LOVE the fact that there is an aquarium in our zoo!

Complete with polar bears

Today we got a special treat when the polar bears were actually playing in the water portion of their habitat.

This one looked like he was taking a bath

After about an hour at the zoo we had to head home for lunch and nap. Since it was so late, and I could see that C was fading fast, we had a special lunch on the couch while he watched Word World {daily pre-nap event}. After an almost 4 hour nap, we headed straight to our Wednesday afternoon tradition {for the last three weeks} the farmer's market in the local church parking lot. We picked up corn, peaches and blackberries and then sat on the grassy hill sharing {another tradition} our weekly Mango water ice. Caleb looks forward to "ice cream" whenever I talk about the farmer's market now.

Daddy beat us home from the market and was already starting dinner. Delicious steaks that I had marinating for 3 days {unintentially} were super yummy and soooo tender! The corn was fabulous...just ask Caleb!

After dinner, it was bath time and bed time before hanging out with Andrew, and now heading to bed.

But first, one more thing that made this day "perfect." During that 4 hour nap, I was able to get some sewing done for clients {still feels strange using that word}, and I finally created a label for my clothes. I love it!

So there you have it, the perfect day. No tantrums or getting upset about things, just mommy and Caleb spending the day together and enjoying every.single.second. Today was most certainly a perfect day and an amazing blessing that I'll cherish for years to come {especially tomorrow when I'm sure the tantrums are sure to return}.

A Regular Martha Stewart

Sadly, since we moved, Caleb's awesome curtains made by my mother-in-law do not fit the windows here. So I had to improvise. Fortunately, I had an old pair of green curtains that I had gotten at Target, but never really used. We hung them up only to find that Caleb didn't like napping with so much light coming into the room.

An hour nap just wasn't going to cut it for me since I know he's still tired after that amount of time. And with tired comes cranky - never a good combination in a toddler {or anyone for that matter}. Also in the move, Andrew conveniently found a ginormous piece of black fabric that he once used as a backdrop taking photos of his architectural models in school. PERFECT! I made two cuts on the fabric, stitched some straight lines, easy peasy blackout curtains!

I want to do a whole post about Caleb's room once it is clean and we have some toddler friendly bedding in there, but for the moment while we're talking about Caleb's room I just wanted to point out that I finally "completed" the family tree wall including a picture of Caleb for the first time, and adding a frame for cousin Audrey. I also updated the pic of cousin Nick to one from our recent beach trip.

And just in case you're wondering, we have several more of these frames in reserve for when future children come along from us or you know anyone else on this wall (hint, hint Aunt Dani and Uncle Matt). I can't wait to have a house of our own again and to put a giant tree decal behind this.
