Pregnancy - 35 Weeks

Pregnancy: 35 weeks, 3 days

Sleep: Amazingly, I'm still sleeping really well.

Gender: The ring test said that Caleb would be a boy, and that this baby is a girl.  We'll see if it was right for a second time in just a few weeks!

Names: I can probably stop posting this since at this point it really is just a tease.  Perhaps if I end up going past my due date I'll give some hints about the names.

Feeling:
I hate drinking water.  It is like an instant heartburn trigger along with pretty much everything else I put in my mouth.

Health:
Everything looks good.  BP is doing well, weight gain is good, baby's heart rate was around 150.  Note that I didn't even change a word of this from my 31 week post because it is all still the same.

Movement: 99% sure baby is head down.  My midwives think so too, so that was reassuring.  I'm seeing all kinds of movement in my belly, just none when Andrew is around.  The other day I actually asked him to move closer to me so the baby would stop kicking me so hard!

Belly:
Taken last Thursday at 34 weeks, 5 days.

Next Appointment: June 5th at 36w, 3d.

Awake or Asleep?

This weekend Caleb and I were cuddling on the couch watching a Disney movie. It was shortly before lunch, and I started to wonder if he was awake or asleep, so I pulled out my phone and switched the camera to the front so that I could see him on the screen. Sure enough, eyes closed. It is hard to hear in the video, but I say something like "Are you awake or asleep?" right at the beginning. Then I say, "Caleb" when he doesn't respond. Just watch his lips and listen carefully for his response.

She's Finally Here

My niece entered this world this morning at 3:05am. She definitely decided to come on her own terms in her own time. I feel the need to document things from my perspective 3.5 hours away from all the action getting updates by text and phone.

So here goes. First, I think some background is necessary. The first time I ever stayed overnight in a hospital was when Caleb was born. I got stitches once when I was in college (volleyball injury). I claim wisdom teeth extraction as my "major surgery" experience. I broke my wrist when I was about 5 or 6 years old. And I sprained my ankles about 300 times. But these things pale in comparison to what my sister has been through.

She has had actual major surgeries. In addition to her wisdom teeth, she's had her appendix and tonsils removed and she's had two ACL surgeries - one on each knee and each with a 9+ month recovery period. When she was in 2nd grade, she developed a rash on the lower half of her body and had to go through all sorts of blood tests and a biopsy to determine the cause. Oh, and I almost forgot {though I'm sure she'd happily remind me} of that one time when I left her to crash on her roller skates resulting in a near compound fracture of two bones in her arm and requiring the doctors to reset the bones before casting it. She was probably 5 or 6 at the time.

Clearly my sister has always been the one who gets hit with these things while I skate by unscathed. You may remember reading about my labor and delivery with Caleb. You know, the one that lasted about 3 hours from start to finish. Piece of cake compared to what she went through to bring her daughter into this world. Let's start at the beginning...

On Monday early morning (May 14th), she was awoken by back pain that radiated around to the front of her belly. Contractions were beginning, and I predicted that baby was sunny side up causing the back pain. They were coming every 6 to 10 minutes. This continued all day Monday. She went to the doctor in the evening and was 1cm dilated - same as two weeks prior. After only having gotten a half night of sleep on Sunday night, she started into Monday night with contractions getting closer together and really not sleeping that night either. When I spoke with her on Tuesday morning (May 15th), the contractions were about 6 minutes apart lasting 1 minute each...still back labor. The pain in her back made it painful to sit, so she stood ALL.DAY.LONG. Finally around 5pm or so the contractions were falling under 5 minutes apart. Around 7pm (after about 40 hours of labor), she headed to the hospital. Upon check in she was 5cm, fully effaced. Baby was confirmed to be sunny side up, but she was assured that the baby would flip as she progressed. Around 2am on Wednesday, May 16th I called my mom for an update. She was at 8cm, baby had flipped from sunny side up to anterior positioning. The midwife broke her water and discovered meconium in the fluid. Within an hour I got a call from my brother-in-law saying, "It's a girl!" So, those last two centimeters only took 45 minutes.

If you're counting, that's approximately 48 hours of labor about 45 of which was back labor. Now here's the impressive part. The part that she was clearly being prepared for her entire life. She did this all without any pain medication.  She had an amazing coach of a husband who helped her through all of that, so I can't forget to give a giant high five to my brother-in-law Matt.  But really, sister was amazing and she's officially my hero!

Can you tell they are related?  Gabi on the left, Caleb on the right.  I think they look pretty darn similar.

Didn't want to forget to show off the most adorable presents ever. Can't even begin to tell you how special it feels to have handwritten cards. I'm so proud of Caleb for his somewhat new found writing skills.

Happy Mother's Day

To all the moms and moms-to-be out there, Happy Mother's Day. I had fun today looking back at some of my favorite pictures of Caleb and I from the last 3.5 years. I couldn't have asked for a more special little guy to make me into a mother for the first time!

I Love This Guy

I've been collecting pictures of Caleb and meaning to post about him, but the longer I go without writing the post, the more daunting it becomes.  So I finally decided to just post some pictures with short captions.  And hopefully soon I can write a post all about my sweet little guy!
With a friend from school while on a field trip to see the Symphony Orchestra.
Cheesin' it up for the camera one afterno
Completely over the cheesin'
Modeling his new sunglasses.

Hunting eggs at Memaw and Pappy's house the week after Easter.
Snoozin' in the car on the way home from visiting Memaw and Pappy.  Notice that he's cuddling a super-soft plastic train tunnel.  He refused to let that thing go.
Three hours later, still snoozin', still holding onto the tunnel.
More egg hunting.
Getting ready for a haircut out on the patio on a particularly cold April day.  He looked so cute in these pajama pants and fleece jacket, but wouldn't smile for the camera.
Checking out the Hershey characters atop Uncle Matt's shoulders.
Egg hunting Easter morning.
Checking out his stash Easter morning.
A marshmallow soccer ball for Easter breakfast.
Delicious...
...not at all nutritious.

Pregnancy - 31 Weeks

Pregnancy: 31 weeks, 5 days

Sleep: Got confirmation that my restlessness is more related to Andrew waking me up than anything pregnancy related.  Friday night Caleb camped out in our king sized bed with Andrew while I slept in Caleb's bed.  Mostly so Andrew could get a good night of sleep without my snoring.  And we all slept great!

Gender: Andrew is gaining weight.  Despite the fact that we've pretty much stopped eating out completely over the last 2 months, he's still gaining weight.  The Old Wives Tale says baby is a girl.

Names:
All ready to go!

Feeling:
Heartburn which I think is actually reflux, upper back pain, general uncomfortableness, more frequent trips to the bathroom

Health:
Everything looks good.  BP is doing well, weight gain is good, baby's heart rate was around 150.

Movement: Well a few days ago I would have said without a doubt that baby was head down.  I was feeling hiccups down low and lots of kicks up high.  But just today I felt what I thought were kicks down lower and what I thought was a tiny butt settling in just below my belly button.  So, maybe he or she is still flipping around in there.

Belly:
Taken last yesterday at 31 weeks, 4 days.

Next Appointment:
May 9th at 32w, 4d.
