Somehow I Survived...

I survived my first week of working full time since before Caleb was born. It was a loooooooonnnnnggggg week.

This was supposed to be my weekend update post. I started on Sunday night and all I got done was uploading pictures. Then Monday morning I started full time work again...
and I woke up with a sore throat...
and there was two inches of snow on the ground and it was still falling...
and after work it was laundry night {Did I mention I can't wait to be able to do laundry whenever I feel like it it is convenient?}
and then on Tuesday morning I felt worse, but still went to work...
and it was still snowing...
another inch or so was on the ground...
then on Wednesday morning it stopped snowing...
but I felt even worse and when I opened my mouth to talk only a soft barking sound came out, but I still went to work...
and I've pretty much been exhausted ever since. So forgive me for not talking about our weekend until Wednesday Thursday Friday.

Last Saturday was a rough day for Caleb. We had planned to drive south to check out the PA Trolley museum, but Caleb just wasn't behaving. He wakes up at 6, and by 9am he had already lost all TV privileges, we had taken all his trains away, and he lost the privilege of going to the trolley museum. It was a gorgeous day with temps in the 40s after days of being in the 20s, and we spent the entire day inside. Now before you go thinking that Caleb had nothing to do, I basically just switched up our Saturday plans for our Sunday plans. We baked cookies instead.

He was a great helper, and of course a great taste tester.

Sunday was forecasted to be a bad day weatherwise which is why we had planned to go to the trolley museum on Saturday, but the switch ended up working out in our favor. The weather Sunday morning was cold and rainy, but that meant that the trolley museum and Santa trolley ride were not crowded at all. We heard that it had been jam packed on Saturday, so we were very glad to have not been there. I guess everything happens for a reason.

The Santa trolley was decorated very festive, and it was warm and toasty on the trolley.

We sang Christmas songs and Santa boarded the trolley. When he boarded, Caleb got super excited and started pointing and yelling, "There he is! There's Santa!" But then Santa came toward him, and he quickly turned away and pressed his head into Daddy's shoulder.

After the trolley ride, we took another trolley ride to the "South Pole"

Then we headed inside for some cookies and hot chocolate and then to view the model train display {aka Caleb's Favorite Part}.

So there you have it, a full recap of the last week. What's going on this weekend? As much as I'd love to say nothing, with Christmas just one week away there's a lot to be done. I'm way behind on finishing a quilt for Caleb, I have a few other presents to buy, mostly done wrapping but I still have a few more things, and then there's grocery shopping for the week ahead and starting to get things in order for holiday travel. Fortunately it's a short week with a long break to follow. My plan is to take everything day by day from now until next Thursday.

I don't have the energy to make this week's post fancy. In a whirlwind sort of way, I'm going to be heading back to work full time on Monday. I interviewed last Tuesday, got a call this Wednesday, and start next Monday. Fortunately, I already had a spot reserved for Caleb at a daycare that we both really like, but that doesn't make it easy. As soon as I got the call my thoughts turned to how much I'd be missing Caleb. I had to think about buying a house and adding another child to our family - things I'm working for - to cheer myself up.

Since Andrew's accident last week we've only had use of one car. Yesterday I was the one without a car, so today was the only day that I could take Caleb to prepare at daycare before he has to be there full time on Monday. I spent the morning there with him, and then headed out after their lunch so he could practice napping there. He cried when I told him I was leaving, but when I put him down on the ground after giving him a hug, he ran right over to the toys and played with the other kids. I stood at the door watching him for a minute and didn't see any tears, so I really hope that the rest of the afternoon went well. I'll pick him up shortly after his naptime is over. I'm looking forward to a weekend of snuggling with my little man. Next week will be rough for us all :(

Caleb: "I don't change light bulbs."

Caleb: "I need some fruit, pweese."
Me: "What kind of fruit do you want?"
Caleb: "I need a pocsiple. A strawberry pocsiple."
Me: "Popsicles, even strawberry ones, aren't fruit."

Caleb: "I needa pway mommy's oyTouch."
Me: "What game do you want to play?"
Caleb {grabs it out of my hand}: "Let me take a look at that."

Things I Miss About Living in a House

1) Being able to do laundry whenever the heck I darn well please! And without having to bring a bucket of quarters along.

2) Having a sprayer attachment at my kitchen sink.

3) That (#2) reminds me of this which is having a garbage disposal that does more than just make noise.

4) Having a programmable thermostat that I can set to warm the house an hour before I want/need to get out of bed.

5) Being able to bring my groceries in from the car without feeling like I got a major workout.

Weekend Recap

We had an absolutely wonderful jam packed weekend. Come Sunday night I looked at Andrew and said, "Do you have to go back to work tomorrow?" I just wasn't ready for the weekend to end.

It all started on Friday. The stars and planets aligned because it was Andrew's work holiday party on the very same night that his parents would be arriving from out of town. Couldn't ask for better babysitters than grandparents. Let me just back up and mention that we are still without a car almost a week after Andrew was rear ended. So we're a 1 car family right now. The holiday party was scheduled to start at 6:30 {only about 5 minutes down the road from us}. Andrew normally gets out of work at 5, but heard through the grapevine that he'd be getting out early, we just weren't sure how early. And, his parents weren't arriving until 5. So, I had to figure out how to get ready at home with Caleb, go pick Andrew up from work, get dinner on the table for grandparents and Caleb, and then finish getting ready all before we had to leave for the party. Oh, and I had to hope that Andrew wasn't going to call to tell me to come pick him up at the exact moment I was in the shower/drying my hair. Writing it out now it doesn't seem too bad, but it felt stressful at the time.

Anyway, I pulled it off! Andrew's parents arrived a little early. We got to all sit together as they ate dinner. Caleb was VERY excited to see GranB and Pop Pop after 2 1/2 months apart, and when we left to go to the party, he barely said goodbye. With as clingy as Caleb has been, we were worried that he'd have a hard time being without us for bath and the bedtime routine, but we couldn't have asked for a better scenario. I breathed a sigh of relief on the way out the door!

We arrived at the party and I promptly had a glass of wine. I gotta tell you this staying home full time without any friends or family around is really wearing on me. I NEED adult interaction and this party was perfect. We had an amazing time with Andrew's coworkers and their spouses. I'm glad he is surrounded by such great people all day! We got home around 10:30 - well past our bedtime, to find out that Caleb had a great night and went to sleep without a fuss.

We didn't have any plans for the rest of the weekend, but I had happened to mention to A's boss's wife that Caleb loves trains. She told us we HAD to go to the Carnegie Science Center to check out their train exhibit. She let us use her pass for free parking, free admission for all of us, and 20% off in the gift shop. I'm telling you, the people around here are so kind and generous! The Science Center did not disappoint, and it turned out to be the perfect weekend to visit {well not so much for those of us who don't like crowds....ahem...Andrew and I} because in addition to their permanent train set up, they also were hosting a Lionel train weekend complete with additional displays in the lobby and special merchandise in the gift shop. Below are a few pics from the trip. No pics of the permanent display because of the lighting in that room.

GranB and Pop Pop scored the perfect train set for Caleb. This Lionel Little Lines set is now the perfect addition to our tree set up. Not surprisingly, Caleb is obsessed!

We headed out for lunch after the museum then home for C's nap. During his nap, we set up the artificial tree and got all the ornaments out so C could help with decorating. I also went shopping with my mother-in-law to find a cute shirt for Caleb to wear with his tie {that I made} and sweater vest {that MIL had bought}. I don't have a pic of the sweater vest, but how completely adorable is this combination? LOVE IT! So glad MIL has a great eye for clothes.

Post nap we decorated the tree, then let C open his presents from GranB and Pop Pop.

Then we headed out for a great dinner at our favorite {read: the only one we know of} seafood restaurant. It was delicious and the perfect end to a great day.

On Sunday we planned to head south to the PA Trolley Museum, but when we woke up it was snowing and didn't show signs of stopping. Even though it never really amounted to anything, we decided to just have a low key day at home. We had set up the train overnight, and as you can see from the pics above, Caleb loves playing with it. I cooked lunch and dinner at our place, and we played games and let C play with his new toys. Later in the day we put together and C helped decorate the gingerbread train that MIL had brought with her.

It really was a wonderful weekend, and I hope that they will come visit again soon. Feels like the Christmas Season is finally here and we're ready for it!

White lights...

Since we're in our apartment we aren't allowed to have a real tree. Our fake tree is pre-lit with white lights. It looks beautiful {even though I'd prefer if it were lit in color}.

What? You didn't think this post would be about the winner of the tree lights? The winner of the giveaway is commenter #2, Megyn. Contact me to claim your prize!

Colored lights on your Christmas tree or white lights on your Christmas tree? I'm talking about the tree inside your house here.

Andrew and I may just get a divorce over this one. Of course, I'm kidding, but we do strongly disagree about this. I'm of the opinion that for the tree inside your house, you need colored lights. Something about white lights on that tree just seems so cold and non-festive. I want my Christmas tree {and my house} to be warm and inviting and celebratory at the holidays. {In recent years, I've come to a place where} I'm fine with white lights on trees outside, and I think that neighborhoods decorated entirely in white lights look very pretty. But that's outside. Where it's, you know, supposed to be cold! The white lights kinda look like snow. And snow is, you know, supposed to be outside!

My husband on the other hand thinks that trees should only be decorated with white lights and is turned off by trees with colored lights. So each year we have a little discussion about this: White lights? Or colored lights?

I'm curious to know what you think and whether you and your significant other agree or disagree. Leave a comment here to let me know what your thoughts on the great debate, and I'll enter you in a drawing to win something from my shop or a pair of those cute shoes I just posted about. Drawing will take place on Monday via Random.org and results will be posted here.

Dying from Cuteness

Do you think it's possible to die from cuteness overload? Well if so, these shoes will do it, or at least make you wish you had a daughter small enough to wear them. I made them for a friend to give to a friend as a baby shower gift, and I used this super easy pattern. Hard to believe, but they are even cuter in person!

First Snowfall

After a day and a half of solid rain {which I haven't seen since before moving to Arizona, and I LOVED btw} we woke up this morning to this:

It was a nice surprise since when I checked the latest weather report before heading to bed last night the snow wasn't supposed to start until this afternoon/evening. This could end up being my "Winter" picture even though it was taken with my cell phone, but given the forecast for the next 5 days...

I kinda doubt that I won't have at least one more opportunity to get out there and snap a good snow shot.

So what do you do with yourself on the first snow day of the year when you haven't had a snow day in eight years?

1) You get a call from your hubby about 1/2 hour after he leaves for work to find out that he's been in a fender bender. Rear ended by someone not paying attention {fairly certain that it had nothing to do with the weather}, but fortunately he's just fine and the car is drivable, but in need of some repairs. The other driver's insurance company claimed responsibility, so we can breathe a sigh of relief there.

2) You head to the grocery store because you have NO FOOD in your house. But first you have to drag your kicking, screaming toddler out the door because all he wants to do is stand at the window and watch the snow fall.

3) You come home and lay down with the toddler in front of the sliding glass door so you can just stare out the window together and watch the flakes kiss the ground. Then you watch as he runs around the living room with an excited smile.

4) You make grilled cheese and tomato soup for lunch. Much better than last year when we had to fake it.

5) Nap time for the toddler is the perfect time to get to work on checking some things off the holiday "to do" list. Christmas cards are FINISHED! Now I just have to tackle the mountain of sewing projects I've decided to take on before the 25th! Oh, and wrap a million presents, and clean my house in preparation for Andrew's parents to come this weekend.

6) Relax and enjoy a quiet evening in with my boys. I'm pretty sure there will be some hot chocolate and snuggling under blankets on the couch while we watch Christmas movies tonight.
